About Shere

A village steeped in history...

Shere is a English quintessential village known for its 15-20th century architecture, located between Guildford and Dorking just off the A25.

It was mentioned in the Domesday book in 1086 with assets such as: 1 church, 2 mills worth 10s per year, 14 ploughs, 3 acres (1.2 ha) of meadow and woodland worth 50 hogs.

Today, its associated history and location within the Surrey Hills National Landscape, it is known for being one of Surrey’s most photographed and picturesque villages.

It’s quaint English charm, historic cottages, medieval church (being a place of worship for over 800 years) and its scenic Tillingbourne stream (which was a power source for industrialised valleys in 17th century England, draws people far and wide to visit and tour the area.
